IT’S NOT ABOUT STARTING OVER, IT’S ABOUT BECOMING MORE

Life has a way of putting us in front of challenging circumstances. I’ve had my share and I’m pretty certain I’m not done yet. When something doesn’t go your way, don’t take it personally.

It’s hard to see it that way when you feel the weight of what just happened to you. That something may be a pretty big deal. I know mine was. I didn’t see it coming. I never had a Vision for it. I was headed in a completely different direction when it landed in my life.

But where I was heading wasn’t meant to be. The impact on me was huge. It was my biggest wake-up call to date. I don’t mean to sound flippant about it. It took 5 years for me to accept that re-direction of my life. There were some very long, dark days to overcome. There are parts of the rubble that remain to this day. It wasn’t something I chose. It was something I was forced to face head on.

For some, the recognition comes as a painful, emotional dullness that has settled over your existence. What once excited you has become lifeless. You find yourself mustering up your willpower just to meet your minimum standard. You can’t wait to turn the lights out at the end of the day to acknowledge that this day is over. This level of existence eats away at the very essence of what you once could be.

There’s a particular desperation that lurks in the ones who feel as though you never figured it out. There’s a constant feeling of absence from the one thing that would make it all better, if only you knew what it was. This individual wears a heavy mask to camouflage the utter anxiety of not connecting with your destiny. It’s a very important aspect of your view of Success. Not to have it is the equivalent of complete humiliation or failure should you be found out.

Or maybe you’re the one who made ALL the right moves only to discover it’s not what you really wanted. Maybe you were able to achieve the markers of Success, only to find out that you’re left feeling empty. There is no joy in sharing your Successes. The people in your life don’t appreciate or value what you have contributed. They don’t (or are unable) to celebrate your achievements. What was the point? You were able to generate wealth, a comfortable lifestyle and yet something is still missing.

When something doesn’t go your way or end up the way you anticipated, don’t take it personally. Take it as a milestone; a marker that you pass along the way to the next phase along your journey to greatness.

Life is like that. She’ll sneak up on you. She’ll challenge you. She’ll shake up your world. It feels cruel. It seems twisted. Yet there is an absolute brilliance to the unfolding of your story. It’s like no tale ever told before. And it is perfection.

This is something to get excited about because ‘Awareness is always the first stage of opportunity’. (Click to Tweet)

Certain moments in time bring you to a place of needing to take inventory of what’s going on. When you don’t get there on purpose, life will find a way to get you there.

In the movie Collateral Beauty, Will Smith’s character questions the universe by writing to Love, Time and Death. Receiving unexpected answers, he begins to see how these things interlock and how even loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty. There’s a moment in the movie when you hear him speaking to adults at a gathering,

‘Life is about people. Love. Time. Death. Now, these three abstractions connect every single human being on earth. Everything that we covet, everything that we fear not having, everything that we ultimately end up buying, is because at the end of the day we long for love, we wish we had more time, and we fear death. Love. Time. Death.’

We establish built-in moments in time that invite us to reflect on what is truly important to us. Ringing in a new year is by far the most widely popularized ritual. You also have birthdays, particularly milestone birthdays. Anniversaries whether yours or someone else’s might stir up the desire to re-examine how far you have come. You take out the yardstick to see how you’re measuring up. A change in circumstances – whether self-selected or thrust upon you – most certainly provides a path to self-examination.

Life is designed with critical moments that allow you to stop and notice who you are and where you are at this moment in time. This is what successful people understand and why they choose to build it into their success planning. When you don’t get there on purpose, life will find a way to get you there. So why not use this phenomenon to its full advantage. The roadblocks, the mishaps, the unforeseen circumstances are life’s way of helping you to create your best life.

It’s counter-intuitive, often very difficult, yet more powerful than any measure of control you attempt to instill in your life. It’s these vital moments that require you to take a stand. It’s these moments that beg you to make a different choice. It’s these moments that reveal more of who are you and who you can truly become.

Work with the flow of life to access the potential that resides in you.

That’s one, albeit important, part of the equation. The other is that you need to decide what you want. Establish your plan to go get it. Then go get it.

Self Leadership skills are what helped me to navigate through the tough times and extract the wisdom I needed to grow into the next level of me.  It is the tool kit I have taught to hundreds of Experts giving them back operating control of their results.  Life will continue to provide challenges.  This is especially true if you have decided to play a bigger game.  Those that are well equipped and willing to learn what it takes, flourish.  The rest, fade away.
