What promises have you made yourself for the new year?

How do you feel about them?

How is it going so far?

If you aspire to have a better life, a healthier body, greater freedom, more money, what you are really saying is that the way you do things now is not getting you those results OR you’re ready to take things to the next level. The first one is not fun to hear, but it’s the truth. The second one seems exciting, but where do you start and how do you sustain the momentum?

Maybe you’ve set a new goal or maybe you’re struggling with the same goal year after year. It doesn’t matter because the truth is the same.

‘Success requires you to create a new normal.’ [tweet]

To have a different level of success, you can no longer do things the same way you’ve been used to.

So what’s it going to take?

Once you have identified the change you want to make, you’ll need to set yourself up for success. I have created a simple outline for what it takes to develop a new habit. The summary is listed below, but download the full version, which includes tips you can apply right away.

  1. Eliminate the old
  2. State your commitment
  3. Identify the new behavior
  4. Get started
  5. Persevere
  6. Transition
  7. Arrive

So what is it really that gets in the way?

Best efforts often fall flat leaving you feeling defeated. Best intentions go astray when things get challenging. Motivation dwindles when it feels tough and the couch looks so relaxing.

There are 3 common obstacles that I hear from clients over and over again. Use this as a checklist against your own to see if it rings true for you.

I don’t have the time.

I get it. Your schedule is already full. But to have a new normal, something has to give. You need to take a look at what sort of investment you need to make with your new thing – time, money, focus. And decide where you’re going to get those resources from. They have to come from somewhere.

I just don’t have the interest. It sounded like something I wanted, but now I don’t know if that’s really true.

If you want to make a change, but are not motivated, re-evaluate your choice. How bad do you want it? Maybe it’s not the right time for you. Are you willing to let one more year go by? If yes, fine, then move on to find something else that gives you a stronger desire. You can’t do everything all at once anyway, so why not pick one thing you at least have a fighting chance at. Make it something you do want. Make it fun.

I don’t have the money needed to invest.

Starting isn’t always about money. Start with what you do have. In fact, start with planning. Take some time to develop your new idea. There’s nothing more powerful than taking that first step. There are so many resources available today that there is no excuse not to get started. Do research, check out what leaders are talking about on the subject. Almost everyone has access to the internet and if you don’t, there are still libraries that exist so you really have no excuse.

Nothing makes me sadder than someone who gets disillusioned about their dream goals. The resource I have developed to support and encourage you to go through the 7 phases above is packed with goodness. Not only will you have a better understanding of what to expect as you journey to your next level of success, you’ll have some concrete ideas about what you need to do in each phase. You deserve to have your goal.
